In the morning of October 12, DP President Renho visited the United States Embassy in Tokyo to meet with Ambassador Caroline Bouvier Kennedy.

Renho, who previously had exchanges with Kennedy regarding their shared interest in women’s
human rights issues, explained that the DP would focus their policies on “investing in future generations”.  The two went on to discuss a variety of issues, including the importance placed by the DP on relations with the U.S., the party’s concerns regarding the security legislation passed by the Diet last year, and the U.S. Presidential election.

Renho stated that she was intending to visit the United States sometime in the future and said she hoped to have Kennedy’s assistance on that occasion.
Knowing that Kennedy is fond of haiku, Renho made the Ambassador a present of a haiku she herself had composed: “Taiheiyo, Hasu no kake hashi, tsumugu jyosei (hito)” [The Pacific Ocean is spanned by a bridge of lotus flowers, spun by a woman] (here the word Hasu (lotus) is a play on words, using the first Chinese character from Renho’s name).

The meeting with the Ambassador was also attended by Deputy President Goshi Hosono, Policy Research Committee Chair Hiroshi Ogushi, and International Department Director-General Hiroe Makiyama for the DP.
